The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a "No Technical Objection" (NTO) to PAL-V, the Dutch company behind the world’s first certified FlyDrive vehicle. This groundbreaking decision confirms that there are no known technical risks preventing full type certification. As a result, the commercial rollout of this pioneering mobility solution is closer than ever.

Airbus Helicopters’ recent decision to pause the CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL project at the end of its current phase highlights the formidable technological hurdles facing the broader Urban Air Mobility (UAM) industry. Among the major challenges cited by Airbus are the shortcomings of current battery technology, which remains insufficient to power safe, reliable, and commercially viable UAM services.

European eVTOL Ambitions on Hold?

SkyDrive, a pioneering Japanese eVTOL aircraft manufacturer, and Osaka Metro, a major transit operator in Osaka, have unveiled plans for the "Osaka Diamond Routes," a futuristic eVTOL mobility network designed to connect key destinations within the city. Announced during the "Osaka Roundtable," this project aims to redefine urban transport in Osaka, starting with the Morinomiya area by 2028 and gradually expanding through 2030 and beyond.

As the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector matures, the integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) into broader transportation ecosystems is becoming a critical priority. ADW is taking significant steps to address this challenge through the establishment of its eVTOL & UAS working group. Tasked with identifying regulatory and operational hurdles, this group also works to craft actionable solutions to drive the growth and acceptance of these technologies.

An enormous amount is being invested in the development of unmanned aircraft. But an aircraft cannot fly if there is no suitable infrastructure, both physical and digital. So where is the investment in UAM?

Who is investing in UAM?

In 2019 the total amount of investing into drone companies was US$1.3 billion, which then doubled to just under US$2.4 billion in 2020. And then in 2021 this amount has reached almost US$7 billion, meaning that it almost tripled from one year to the next.

Boeing is investing another 450 million dollars (400 million euros) in Wisk, the developer of unmanned flying vehicles that can be used as taxis in the future.
