Over the past four years, Project CAELUS has emerged as a pioneering blueprint for integrating drones into the UK's low-level airspace. The initiative, supported by UKRI's Future Flight Challenge and led by NATS Services (the UK's leading provider of air traffic control services) alongside 15 other consortium partners, has not only laid the technical groundwork for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations but also redefined the collaborative, technological, and regulatory landscape needed to commercialise drone use in healthcare and beyond.

In a significant development for urban air mobility, France’s Ministry of Transport has greenlighted the construction of a vertiport on a floating landing pad on the River Seine in Paris. This initiative is geared towards showcasing electric air taxi flight demonstrations during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The vertiport, operational until December 31, 2024, marks a crucial step for eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) air taxi developer Volocopter and Paris’ airport authority, Groupe ADP.

In a progressive move, the Amsterdam police have announced the establishment of a specialized drone team, a first in the Netherlands. This team will consist of full-time drone pilots, marking a significant step forward in the use of new technology for safety purposes. Volocopter has successfully concluded a multi-day flight test campaign spanning from December 7 to 13 with its crewed 2X aircraft in the Japanese cities of Osaka and Amagasaki. The comprehensive testing initiative, conducted over a week, marks a significant milestone in local flight testing, primarily aimed at familiarizing the crew, testing communications tools, and refining flight test procedures in anticipation of the 2025 World Exposition, Osaka Kansai EXPO.

Headlines in 2021 highlighted Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) autonomous deliveries of COVID tests and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while 2022 unveiled plans for a 265-kilometer drone superhighway. Drones have also become instrumental for institutions like the Royal Mail and the NHS, painting a promising future for the drone industry in the UK.
