Investment in the UAS industry: What's holding us back?

Our board of recommendation advises us on strategic issues which are in the interest of the sector, the general public and Amsterdam Drone Week. At Commercial UAV Expo Europe we spoke to Jacques Kruse Brandaõ, head of political affairs & public co-creation of NXP. He shares his vision on the drone industry and how it is evolving.

Global opportunities

NXP Semiconductors enables secure connections and infrastructure for a smarter, easier and safer world. They are driving innovation in the secure connected vehicle, end-to-end security and privacy and smart connected solutions markets and supply chips which are necessary to build and develop Unmanned Aerial Systems.

Jacques states “One of the reasons why NXP is interested in drone business and applications is because we expect it to be an evolving market and a huge opportunity for our world. Drones have many applications; inspection, surveillance and taxi services, rescue missions and transportation. There are plenty of opportunities for the society and citizens when it comes to the use of drones.”

Challenges to overcome

According to Jacques Kruse Brandaõ, there are still challenges that need to be overcome before companies can truly be successful in this upcoming market. These are mainly regulation and safety. “If we want to overcome these obstacles, we need to look at already existing industries such as Automotive and IoT and learn from their best practices. We obviously want to avoid accidents and secure safe traffic - technologies for identification, secure communication, Detect & Avoid and geofencing are already available for this.”

Seeking approval

Jacques states that one of the main challenges we have is to convince the aviation authorities to give the green light. “Once the protocols, technologies and regulations are defined, we are able to make a huge leap towards implementation, which means that investing in this industry will become more attractive.”
