The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded its first U-space service provider (USSP) certificate, marking a major milestone in the rollout of a harmonised drone airspace system across Europe. The certificate was officially presented to ANRA Technologies during the Airspace World trade show in Lisbon.

The drone service market was estimated to be around 30 billion US dollars, with an estimated annual growth rate of around 7 to 8 percent until 2030. In order to meet these astounding numbers the industry needs to scale up operations. That also means to scale up beyond visual line of site (BVLOS) operations, because  that’s where the business is. Think of inspection services, surveillance, delivery, et cetera. 
But before we get to the stage of scalable operations there are a number of challenges - technical, operational, regulatory, standards, financial, political - that must be adressed.

On Tuesday, 5th of September, our Industry Update addressed the development of a U-space Common Information Service (CIS) in the Netherlands and the possible use of CIS outside of U-space airspace. Wilbert Ritsema, Projectmanager U-Space at the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Watermanagement explained the technical, operational, regulatory, and safety aspects of integrating unmanned aircraft into the airspace, focusing on how U-space and CIS are playing a crucial role in paving the way for this integration. In this article we highlighted some of the questions Ritsema answered.

Skydio, a prominent drone manufacturer in the United States and a global leader in autonomous flight, has announced a groundbreaking achievement. The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) has granted Skydio an extraordinary nationwide approval for flying drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) using remote operations. This approval, considered one of the most advanced regulatory clearances worldwide, paves the way for streamlined BVLOS operations using Skydio Dock and Remote Ops.
